Vertical Solo Circumnavigation

The Alpha Global Expedition aims to achieve the first ever single-handed ‘vertical’ circumnavigation. British yachtsman, Adrian Flanagan departed from the south coast of England in October 2005 aboard his Stainless Steel sloop, ‘Barrabas’. He has sailed 26,000 miles to Alaska following a route westabout around Cape Horn. Adrian plans to complete the voyage in the summer of 2007 by making the first ever single-handed transit of the Arctic Ocean along Russia’s Northern Sea Route returning to the UK towards the end of August. Solitaire du Figaro Update
The following is an article from the Solitaire Afflelou Le Figaro website. The latest position report puts Gildas Morvan (Cercle Vert) in the lead with Nicolas Berenger (Kone Ascenseurs) in second, usurping Michel Desjoyeaux from first place. The fleet has spread out from North to South into three distinct groups; the first northern one is headed by Jeanne Gregoire (Banque Populaire), Alexis Loison (All Mer Inéo Suez) and Thierry Duprey du Vorsent (Domaine du Mont d'Arbois. This group appears to have made the most of the thermal breeze in both Weymouth and Lyme Bays to keep the boat speed going. The second group, slightly south, initially closer to shore, has realigned the direct course. This second group is actually leading for now and is spear headed by of Cercle Vert, Koné Ascenseurs and Luisina (Eric Drouglazet). Furthest South, the third group that lead up to now has fallen back as the wind drops; Foncia, Financo and Scutum lead this third pack. The new flow is expcected in the first half of the night from the North West which puts those furtherst North, the outsider group, in a good position to reach it first if the sea breeze holds suffieciently. Check out the the Solitaire Afflelou Le Figaro website for pictures, video, and race coverage.

Solitaire Afflelou Le Figaro

Tuesday, 31 July 2007 It was with a sense of release that many of skippers finally got to the start line of La Solitaire Afflelou Le Figaro. This morning of the start was spent checking over the latest weather files, double and triple checking equipment and fittings and tweaking the routing for the first leg that lies ahead: 415 miles from Caen to Cork. At 15h20 today 49 skippers competing in La Solitaire Afflelou Le Figaro crossed the start line to set off round the 15.3 mile inshore course to the Radio France Bouy in ideal sailing conditions: clear skies, a flat sea and 10 knots of northerly breeze. Three individual recalls were given to Jeanne Gregoire (Banque Populaire), Pietro D’Alì (Kappa) and Nicolas Lunven (Bostik). At the outset, five times world champion windsurfer, Robert Nagy (Theolia) was leading by some 10 boat lengths over Frederic Duthil (Distinxion). The fleet faces a 35 mile reach west along the Cotentin coastline to Barfleur, before they head across the Channel to the Fairway marker buoy off the Needles this evening. Transat Mini

This hot little class of boats seems to finally be taking off here in the U.S.. The most recent Bermuda 1-2 had 8 boats and their own start. Jeff Dingle is promoting an Owen Clark designed production version of the Mini for the U.S. market that is getting close to being in production.

2007 Solo Mackinac Challenges
The Great Lakes Singlehanded Society has completed their 2007 Mac's and is preparing for their Trans-Superior and Lake Erie Solo challenges. This years Mac's had 48 skippers competing. 17 boats raced in the 29th Annual Port Huron to Mackinac race, and an additional 31 boats raced in the 11th Annual Chicago to Mackinac event. Both races started at the same time and the fleets converged at Mackinac Island for a well deserved celebration. This is a great organization. Check them out at www.solosailor.org.
